American Sniper has already hit $1 million, despite having been released in only 4 theaters thus far. In just 5 short days, the R-rated military biographical piece has reached a mark that is nothing to be scoffed at. The movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, is set to follow the story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, believed to be one of the deadliest snipers in US military history through his tours in Iraq and his life at home. Bradley Cooper plays the lead, depicting the character with such a dedication to the truth that Kyle’s widow has attested to, saying, “If there was ever going to be a movie that was even going to come close to getting it right, this was it.” Cooper met with Kyle once, before the veteran was tragically gunned down at a Texas shooting range by another former military member with severe PTSD. Following Kyle’s death, screenwriter Jason Hall spent hours speaking with Kyle’s widow, Taya, to fill in the blanks of Chris Kyle’s story. Eastwood, Cooper, and Sienna Miller (to actress playing Taya in the film), also met with Taya. Taya, friends, and family of Kyle appear to be pleased with the film and its representation of Kyle and the events of his life. It would seem that in the 4 theaters it has premiered in so far, the audience would agree. $1 million in 4 theaters in 5 days says it all.
American Sniper is set to release nationwide January 19, 2015.
